Is Your Tooth Sensitivity Something Urgent?

Does biting into something hot or cold send a sudden jolt of discomfort through your teeth? That’s tooth sensitivity, and it has a way of getting into your daily life. It’s understandable to find it frustrating, but does it warrant an urgent trip to the dentist? Here’s what you should know about what’s behind it and whether it’s a dental emergency that needs immediate attention.

Why Are My Teeth Sensitive?

Before deciding on next steps, it helps to understand what’s causing the sensitivity. In most cases, it comes down to weakened enamel. When this outer layer thins, the dentin underneath becomes exposed. It contains tiny channels that lead straight to the nerve, so hot and cold temperatures can easily trigger that familiar zing of pain.

This erosion typically happens because of the bacteria in your mouth. They feed on leftover sugar particles after eating and produce an acid that wears away your enamel. Acidic foods and drinks can have a similar effect on their own. Gum disease is another common culprit, since it can cause your gumline to recede and leave your tooth roots exposed.

So, Is Tooth Sensitivity Urgent?

The reassuring news is that tooth sensitivity usually isn’t cause for major alarms. If it comes and goes without lingering, it’s often fine to wait and mention it at your next routine checkup and cleaning. In the meantime, a desensitizing toothpaste can strengthen your enamel. It may also be worth pausing any whitening products for a while. Cutting back on hot, cold, acidic, and sugary foods can also make a noticeable difference.

There are certain signs that mean you shouldn’t wait to see your dentist, such as:

  • Lasting sensitivity for 15 seconds or longer
  • Visible damage to your enamel
  • A noticeable dark spot on a tooth
  • Gums that appear to be receding or pulling away
  • Signs of infection, such as bleeding or swelling.

If any of these apply to you, your sensitivity may be pointing to a larger issue at hand, like a cavity or infection. Getting it looked at promptly is the best way to get back to enjoying your smile without any problems.
